DOCS Group Homes Enquiry

THE INQUIRY FORCED ON THE GOVERNMENT BY THE OPPOSITION

26 October 1999

The Member for Lismore, Thomas George, has welcomed the start of the inquiry into the re-auspicing of DOCS Group Homes and unmet need in the disability sector.

"The Upper House agreed to the inquiry despite the reluctance of the Minister Faye Lo Po to be accountable for her policy," Mr George said today.

"We've renewed our call for the Carr Government to put their plans on hold until the conclusion of the inquiry.

The Carr Government has a moral obligation to immediately halt this process, which has caused much distress to people with disability, their families and carers.

The Upper House also agreed to the Opposition call for all Government papers to be released - including Treasury papers - in relation to this matter.

I am confident the inquiry will show that this policy was hatched in secret by Treasury and agreed to by the Minister with the primary objective of saving money.

I also am confident the Inquiry will establish that despite its clear obligation to do so under the Disability Services Act, the Government did not consult with or respect the interests of people with disability.

It is our hope that the Government will co-operate fully with the Inquiry and act on its recommendations.

Our aim includes the provision of greater certainty and additional availability of accommodation and other services for people with disability" Mr George concluded.
