DOCS Group Homes 16 September 1999

16 September 1999

Member for Lismore, Thomas George today said the Coalition has delivered on its promise to establish an inquiry into the Carr Government's policy to tender out DOCS Group Homes.

The inquiry, to be conducted by the parliament's influential Social Issues Committee, was agreed to unanimously by the Legislative Council.

The Upper House also voted, without dissent, to support the Coalition's demand for a moratorium to be imposed on the tendering out of the DOCS group homes while the Inquiry takes place.

This is a great victory for people with disabilities in NSW, and the Carr Government now has a moral obligation to immediately halt this process, which has caused much distress to people with disabilities, their families and carers.

The Upper House also has agreed to the Coalitions call for all Government papers to be released, including Treasury papers, in relation to this matter.

I am confident the Inquiry will establish that despite its clear obligation to do so under the Disability Services Act, the Government did not consult with or respect the interests of people with disabilities.

On behalf of the NSW Coalition I thank all Upper House members for supporting what will be a far-reaching Inquiry.

It is our hope that the Government will co-operate fully with the Inquiry and act on its recommendations.

Mr George paid tribute to the efforts of Shadow Minister Stephen O'Doherty and the Coalition whose aim includes the provision of greater certainty and additional availability of accommodation and other services for people with disabilities. I am certain that today the parliament took a significant step towards that aim.
