COUNTRYLINK TIMETABLE CHANGES TO CREATE NIGHTMARE FOR NORTH COAST TRAVELLERS

13 April 2000

Changes to the Countrylink timetable will create nightmares for North Coast travellers with significant wait times between connecting services, NSW National Party Leader, George Souris said today.

Transport Minister, Carl Scully, confirmed in Parliament yesterday that the Countrylink timetable had been reviewed.

In Question Time, Mr Souris asked Mr Scully, to explain why, due to the proposed changes to Countrylink's northern line timetable:

1) travellers will be forced to wait nine hours in Sydney for a connection to Melbourne;
2) travellers will be forced to stay overnight in Sydney if travelling to western destinations;
3) the night train from Melbourne will not connect with the day service to Murwillumbah or Dubbo.

"Clearly, this is illogical and will cause mass inconvenience for travellers," Mr Souris said.

"I and North Coast National Party Members, Thomas George (Lismore) and Don Page (Ballina) are fighting to have this nonsense overturned.

"Mr Scully must immediately reassess the timetable changes so that Countrylink travellers don't, for example, have to pay for overnight accommodation in Sydney, because of the failure of Countrylink to provide connecting trains within a reasonable time frame.

"Timetable changes of this sort do nothing to improve services to travellers and will only serve to turn people away from using Countrylink," Mr Souris said.
