GEORGE SUPPORTS CALLS TO PROTECT COMMUNITY EVENTS AGAINST INSURANCE INCREASES

23 January 2002

National Party Member for Lismore, Thomas George supported the call for an overhaul of public liability insurance that are endangering the running of a number of local community events and is encouraging the State Government to offer bipartisan support for reform of the insurance industry.

"For some time now the Coalition has been calling for the State Government to take urgent action to avoid the collapse of community events in NSW.

"The Coalition recognises that many local organisations are doing it tough as they battle to pay huge increases in insurance premiums. We are happy to participate in any reform process.

"I have been waiting on the Carr Government and pursing the Attorney General's office to release details of the Inquiry it intends to conduct into public liability insurance. I have many people on file waiting on a copy of the Inquiry's Terms of Reference," stated Mr George

"A proposal by the Federal Government would also assist in the introduction of a public liability scheme to try and halt the surge in premiums which if not capped could possibly see the end of many community based activities.

"Locally the Show Societies, hall committees and other incorporated bodies are being threatened by the doubling of public liability insurance premiums.

"Local Government authorities have also approached me in relation to ageing playground equipment in parks that are also at risk of removal or not being replaced as councils implement risk management strategies to reduce insurance premiums.

"It is imperative that reform action is taken immediately to end the spiralling increases in public liability insurance premiums," Mr George concluded.
