LISMORE MP SEEKS COMMUNITY FEEDBACK AHEAD OF ALCOHOL SUMMIT

17 June 2003

Lismore MP Thomas George is calling on the community to provide him with relevant issues and concerns for him to take to the NSW Summit on Alcohol Abuse 2003 in Sydney next month.

"I welcome the Summit because alcohol abuse, particularly among young people is a real and growing problem on the North Coast," Mr George said.

"The clubs and hotels have lifted their game in terms of responsible service of alcohol in recent years and by and large they are doing the right thing."

"However the local police officers tell me some parents are not taking responsibility in this area. Parents who do not keep a close enough watch on their children are putting them at risk, with youth drunkenness often leading young people into trouble."

"I am also concerned about the incidents of adults purchasing alcohol for the consumption by minors," Mr George said.

"That is why this summit is important, that is why I will be participating and that is why I really need to hear from parents and young people, so I can give the Lismore electorate the best possible representation at this landmark event."

Mr George said the Summit would be divided into ten working groups and that, subject to the feedback he got from local residents, he would focus on the Family Health and Wellbeing and Responsible Supply and Consumption working groups.

Concerned residents can write to Mr George at PO Box 52, Lismore or ring his office on 6621 3624.
