Thomas George Welcomes Online Boom For Bonalbo

3 February 2003

Residents of Bonalbo will have access to the Internet, computer training and business services through a new community-managed Technology Centre, Nationals Member for Lismore, Thomas George said today.

Mr George said that Bonalbo was among eight regional communities in New South Wales to benefit from $1.1 million in Commonwealth Government funding for modern online technology and services.

"I am pleased that Bonalbo will receive $170,000 funding and during my West of the Range tour on Wednesday 12 February 2003, I will be taking the time to see how the facility is developing.

"I welcome the Federal Coalition Government working in partnership with smaller local communities to bridge the gap between urban and regional NSW. A number of constituents have highlighted difficulties that have experience, particularly in this area close to the Queensland boarder in dealing with State Government departments," Mr George said.

"The local Progress & Development Association bought to my attention the need for provision of online Roads and Traffic Authority services at the Centre. Now services such as ordering number plates, changing address and vehicle registration renewals can all be done online at the Centre.

"The Community Technology Centre in Bonalbo will be a dedicated technology hub managed by local community groups that will enable both residents and visitors to access online services and training.

"Local businesses and residents in Bonalbo will be able to nominate the services that should be provided by the Centre, which might include such areas as online business advice, web development and hosting.

"Access to the latest technology is essential for education, business and regional development," Mr George said.
