Nationals Promise More Affordable Public Transport For Country NSW

NATIONALS PROMISE MORE AFFORDABLE PUBLIC TRANSPORT FOR COUNTRY NSW

13 March 2003

Nationals' Member for Lismore, Thomas George today welcomed the announcement that a NSW Liberal/National Coalition Government would slash bus fares for thousands of pensioners and seniors in country NSW.

Mr George said the Nationals would introduce quarter bus fares across NSW on regular, local private bus services for all Pensioner Concession and Seniors Card holders.

"Pensioner Concession and Seniors Card holders who live outside the Government bus network in country NSW deserve equal access to affordable public transport," Mr George said.

"Unlike Sydney Labor, the Nationals in Government will address inequities for seniors and pensioners in public transport.

"While Pensioner Concession holders in the city can purchase $1.10 tickets that allow unlimited travel on Government buses, in country areas where non-Government buses operate, the half fares are simply more expensive.

"I am pleased that in Government, the Nationals will reduce this cost to pensioners and seniors in the Lismore electorate by providing quarter fares to Pensioner and Seniors Card holders.

"This will halve the current costs of existing concession fares for Pensioner Concession and Seniors Card holders who travel on non-Government buses.

"This is a great initiative that will bring benefits to more than 800,000 Seniors Card holders and 600,000 Pensioner Concession Card holders across NSW," Mr George said

A Liberal/National Coalition Government will:
Introduce quarter fares across NSW on regular, local private bus services for all Pensioner Concession [1] and Seniors Card holders;
Make the quarter fares available from 1 October 2004; and
Work with all public transport operators to ensure that smartcard ticketing, when introduced, allows seamless travel and pricing across all modes and creates a consistent regime for fare concessions.
