NSW CLUBS RECEIVE GST EXEMPTION AFTER BROGDEN AND STONER REQUEST

20 October 2003

The Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George today demanded NSW Treasurer Michael Egan ask the Federal Government to extend the GST rebate on gaming machine revenue to ALL clubs in the area.

Mr George welcomed the announcement by NSW Liberal Leader John Brogden that he had secured the rebate for 889 clubs.

"This will go a long way to helping the clubs that are most vulnerable to Bob Carr's Club Tax," Mr George said.

"Hopefully, as a result of the efforts put in by the NSW Coalition, they will not only survive but will be able to continue their tremendous community work.

"But there are still 508 clubs that NSW Treasurer Michael Egan is refusing to ask the Howard Government to provide the rebate for, such as Urbenville Bowling Club, Woodenbong Golf Club, Bonalbo Bowling Club, Nimbin Bowling Club and other clubs within the electorate.

"All Michael Egan has to do is ask! We've even written the letter to Peter Costello for him.

"If this greedy Labor Treasurer refuses to ask for the rebate there are many clubs, some in our area, that face extinction.

"And that means an end to the many community grants from clubs - sports gear for our kids, support and aid for disabled groups."

The GST rebate is on the first $200,000 of gaming revenue, up to $18,000 a year per club, a significant sum for clubs that operate on small profits in order to support the community.

Mr George also again called on Labor to axe its new tax on clubs.

"Bob Carr and Michael Egan must back down from this greedy, mean tax grab," Mr George said.

"If they don't many clubs will collapse, hundreds of jobs will be lost, and many hundreds of community programs will come to an end. It's that simple." Mr George said.
