GEORGE AGAIN CALLS ON MINISTER TO LOOK AFTER NEW SOUTH WALES JOBS

15 October 2003

The Minister for Regional Development, David Campbell, once again sold out his country constituents in Parliament yesterday when he voted against a motion to save jobs in regional areas, Thomas George, Member for Lismore said today.

Mr Campbell voted down an urgent motion to discuss the closure of the Murrumbidgee College of Agriculture in favour of a debate on the rumoured privatisation of Australia Post.

"The Minister used a motion concerning the Federal issue of Australia Post to defeat a motion regarding the loss of an educational facility and consequently a number jobs in a regional area," Mr George said.

"This is the second time in as many weeks that the Minster has ignored the important issues of his portfolio in favour of criticising the Federal Government.

"Last week he criticised Telstra for slashing jobs in northern NSW, but did nothing to save the 17 administrative jobs that are on the line at the Wollongbar Agricultural Institute.

"This week he has the guile to vote for a motion regarding the Federal issue of Australia Post, while disregard the devastation the closure of the Murrumbidgee College of Agriculture will have on that area.

"Meanwhile, there is still the matter of the 17 jobs at the Wollongbar Agricultural Institute and still more jobs under threat at the Department of Education and Training in Lismore. Where is the Minister on these issues?"

"There are regional jobs at stake here while the Minster concentrates his State resources on Federal issues

"The Minister needs to get serious about his own portfolio and give regional people in NSW the support they need," Mr George said.
