National Party Member for Lismore, Thomas George, today called on the NSW Minister for Regional Development, David Campbell, to save the jobs of 17 administration workers from the Wollongbar Agricultural Institute.

Mr George said he welcomed Mr Campbell's criticism on the Federal issue of Telstra slashing jobs in the northern NSW, but said the Minister had been strangely silent on the subject of regional job losses from his own State Government departments.

"Nobody wants to see any more country jobs lost, but the Minister needs to focus his support on the threatened jobs which fall under his own Governments auspices such as those at Wollongbar," Mr George said.

"It is his very own Government that is intent on ripping the heart out of northern New South Wales, by way of redundancies in regional government departments.

"I also call on the Minister to provide much needed funding for support field officers at NSW Agriculture to enable them to do their job properly.

"Furthermore, I ask the Minster to show his support for the positions under threat at the Department of Education and Training in Lismore due to the restructuring changes.

"Corporate Services Personnel, Office Managers, Clerical, Properties and Information Technology staff are all waiting on tenterhooks to know if their jobs will still exist. These people need the backing of the Minister to ensure their livelihoods are protected.

"When jobs are lost from regional areas, the reverberations are far reaching, affecting families and whole communities.

"The Minster has affirmed his support for the development of our area and yet won't come into bat for the people of the Lismore electorate when they really need him," Mr George said.
