EXISTING JUSTICES OF THE PEACE - CONTACT NEEDED

10 December 2003

The Nationals Member for Lismore, Thomas George has called on local JP's to contact his office, if they have not already done so, to enable the latest requirements and information, following legislation which came into force on 8 December 2003 under the new Justice of the Peace Act 2002, to be sent to them.

Mr George said today that prior to the implementation of the Act, he had encouraged Justices to register with his office so that he could keep them informed of their duties and application for reappointment.

"The main change affecting current JP's is that you will have to reapply every five years. By instituting this requirement it allows the Attorney General's Department to perform regular criminal and other probity checks to ensure that Justices remain "fit and proper" persons to hold that Office," Mr George said.

"Existing Justices of the Peace have three years (until 1 December 2006) to lodge your first reappointment application and to re-establish either an employment or community based need for the appointment"

"Forms are available from my office and to ensure you are updated, I encourage all JP's to contact my office on 6621 3624," concluded Mr George.
