LISMORE MP LAUNCHES PETITION AGAINST "UNFAIR" POKIE TAX HIKE

17 June 2003

A real threat to the survival of clubs on the North Coast has prompted Lismore State Member Thomas George to launch a petition calling on the Carr Government to reverse pokie tax hikes announced in the June State Budget.

"The Coalition has made strong representations to the Premier to abandon this tax increase but we don't have the numbers in Parliament to stop it and that is why I am resorting to people power," Mr George said.

"I will be sending copies of my petition to all the clubs in the Lismore electorate, and I am calling on all local residents to sign up so we can send a clear message to Sydney that we cannot afford Labor's tax increase."

Mr George said that if this tax was implemented as planned in September next year many local clubs would go to the wall.

"We are not just talking about job losses and the disappearance of venues where country communities gather, we will lose the strong financial support our clubs provide to community, sporting and other local volunteering organisations," Mr George said.

"In addition many local small businesses rely on the orders they get from our clubs for their survival. The Labor Government's pokie tax hike is effectively going to hurt everyone in the Lismore Electorate whether they are regular club visitors or not."

Mr George said he would present the petition to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly when the State Parliament resumed in September.

The petition is already available for signing at Mr George's office at 55 Carrington Street, Lismore and will soon be available at most local registered clubs.
