LISMORE ELECTORATE TO BENEFIT FROM COALITION'S EXTENSION OF THE SENIORS CARD

13 January 2003

The highly successful Seniors Card will be extended under a NSW Coalition Government, and will benefit people in the Lismore electorate, Nationals' Thomas George, Member for Lismore said today.

Mr George said that a Liberal/National Government would allow those over the age of 55, working less than 20 hours per week, and whose partners are Seniors Card holders, to access the Card.

"Many couples have ceased full time work, and yet both could not benefit from the Seniors Card. This is because of a State Labor Government insistence that the card only be applicable to retired people over the age of 60," Mr George said.

"This is a terrific initiative that sees an additional 365 in the electorate able to access the card. It offers some real savings to couples, many of whom do everything together, but pay different amounts just because of their age.

The Seniors Card benefits include over 6,000 different discounts including transport, movies, accommodation, meals, books and insurance.

"This extension recognises that if a couple is not working full time and one of them is over the age of sixty, then the couple is effectively retired," Mr George said.

"This is in addition to the extension of core pensioner concessions to self funded retirees who are holders of the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, which has already been pledged by the Coalition.

"Again the Coalition is rewarding our seniors, who have worked hard and contributed all their lives to make this State better," Mr George said.

The extension of the Seniors Card will commence on 1 July 2003 and cost $10.3 million in its first year of operation.

"This is great news for hundreds of people in the electorate of Lismore and is a decision based on equity and commonsense," Mr George said.
