Seniors Week Awards

15 January 2003

The Best Time for Ages is the theme for Seniors Week 2003, and nominations for awards are now open, Nationals' Member for Lismore, Thomas George said today.

"Seniors Week, is a very popular time in our community and this year will be held from 16 - 21 March," Mr George said

"It is a time to celebrate the valuable contribution older people make to our local communities and indeed throughout rural and regional NSW.

"Seniors Week is about challenging age related stereotypes in our society. The week invites people to consider their own relationships with and attitudes towards older people," said Mr George.

"One of the big features of Seniors Week is the Premier's Seniors Week Awards, which seek to recognise individuals or community groups who:

Provide role models to inspire and encourage other older people
Challenge traditional assumptions about older people growing older
Volunteer time to helping the community
Advocate on behalf of older people
Are responsible for a major activity or project that benefits the local community
Have engaged in long standing service to older people in the community

Lismore Electorate has a long tradition of seniors in the community who are actively involved in the community and who work tirelessly, and these awards are a perfect opportunity to recognise this contribution.

Nomination forms are available by logging on to or by telephoning the Seniors Card project officer on (02) 827 02228. Nominations close on Monday, 20 January, 2003.

"Nominees must be 60 years of age or over and a resident of New South Wales," said Mr George.
