Rebates For Country Rainwater Tanks To Ease Pressure On Town Water Supplies

REBATES FOR COUNTRY RAINWATER TANKS TO EASE PRESSURE ON TOWN WATER SUPPLIES

7 February 2003

The pressure on town water supplies during future dry periods would be eased under a Liberal/National Government by extending the rebate for the installation of rainwater tanks to country areas, Nationals' Member for Lismore, Thomas George said today.

"The Nationals believe rainwater tanks allow water resources to be utilised more effectively and take pressure off existing water storages.

"That is why the Nationals will extend the rebate for the installation of rainwater tanks to all residents and businesses in country NSW," Mr George said.

"There is already a rebate for installing rainwater tanks available to residents of Sydney, the Blue Mountains and Illawarra, but the city-centric Sydney Labor Government has neglected the people of country NSW by excluding them from the rebate scheme.

Mr George said that from July 1, the Nationals would provide up to $650 to encourage country residents to install rainwater tanks, including a rebate of up to $500 for the installation of a large rainwater tank and a rebate of $150 if the rainwater tank is connected to a toilet and/or washing machine.

"Country areas experience water shortages, so it is essential that country people are encouraged to store rainwater for domestic use to ease the burden on existing water storages.

"Increased water storage facilities will be vital when the drought breaks and this rebate will assist country people to store rainwater for future domestic use," Mr George said.
