Nationals Member for Lismore, Thomas George MP, said he was disappointed with the outcome of today's meeting with the Minister for Transport, The Hon Michael Costa MLC.

In a meeting between the Minister, Mr George and local Mayors, Minister Costa confirmed the Casino - Murwillumbah rail service will close next Monday, 17th May 2004.

Mr George said they discussed the idea of establishing a working party to look at alternative uses for the track, which Minister Costa has agreed to.

"The working party will consist of local Members of Parliament, local Mayors and other interested parties, who will try to find an alternative use for the track that will encourage new business to the line."

"Following our discussion, the Minister has agreed to keep the Lismore, Byron Bay and Murwillumbah CountryLink offices open until the working party hands down its findings."

"He has also agreed to the continuing use of the Lismore Railway Station as the pick up and drop off point for the CountryLink bus service."

"In the meantime Minister Costa has assured that the track will not be dismantled," Mr George said.
