Thomas George, Nationals Member for Lismore is pleased with the announcement that areas of the Lismore electorate have been declared a Natural Disaster area following the current floods.

"This declaration now activates the availability of financial assistance to local Councils, small businesses, primary producers and individuals via State and Federal relief arrangements," Mr George said.

"The Rural Assistance Authority (RAA) administers the aid to small businesses and primary producers, whilst the Department of Community Services (DoCS) helps individuals," advised Mr George.

Conditions apply, such as for businesses and producers the assistance is not compensatory and does not cover loss of trade/income or repairs/replacement covered by insurance. The support is by way of a low interest loan to the maximum of $130,000.

Further information and application forms can be obtained from the RAA website at or calling 1800 678593.

For individuals DoCS is responsible for providing immediate welfare assistance to victims of disasters. Payments made be made to allow people to repair or replace their home and basic contents, where they meet a means test and if they are not adequately insured.

"These forms of support can aid peoples recovery after disasters such as the floods we have seen this week," concluded Mr George.
