REHABILITATION UNIT MUST BE RETAINED IN LISMORE: GEORGE

14 November 2005

The Nationals' Member for Lismore, Thomas George, has demanded the Rehabilitation Unit at St Vincent's Hospital be retained in Lismore rather than be relocated to Ballina.

Speaking in Parliament, Mr George called on the NSW Labor Government to direct the North Coast Area Health Service to redevelop the Rehabilitation Unit in Lismore.

"This Unit provides vital services in our local community and it would be ludicrous to close the Unit in Lismore," Mr George said.

"Easy access to services provided by the Unit such as physiotherapy, speech and occupational therapy is important given many patients are not very mobile and aren't up to travelling long distances."

Mr George said the patient figures supported the retention of the Unit in Lismore.

"64 per cent of the patients that use the Unit at St Vincent's come from Lismore, Alstonville, Casino, Kyogle, Bonalbo and Coraki," Mr George said.

"29 per cent of patients are from Ballina, Byron, Mullumbimby, Yamba, Ocean Shores, Woodburn and Wooli.

"The remaining 7 per cent of patients are from Grafton and elsewhere.

"It doesn't make sense for the Unit to be moved from Lismore given most of its patients come from Lismore and the surrounding areas."

Mr George also congratulated the Unit's dedicated and hard-working staff and thanked them for the wonderful work they do on a daily basis.
