NATIONALS/LIBERALS TO CUT COST OF CROWN LAND ROAD RENTS FOR LISMORE FARMERS

8 March 2005

Rent on Crown land road enclosure permits for landholders in the Lismore Electorate would be much cheaper under a Nationals/Liberal Coalition Government, Thomas George Nationals Member for Lismore said today.

Mr George has welcomed the announcement by the NSW Leader of The Nationals Andrew Stoner that in Government the Coalition would slash Labor's massive rents on road enclosure permits.

"The hundreds of permit holders in the Lismore Electorate have spoken and The Nationals/Liberals have listened," Mr George said.

"Under Labor landholders are being slugged between $350 and $750 plus a year to rent what are often small and unproductive pieces of land. Under The Nationals/Liberal Coalition they will pay $75 a year, CPI adjusted.

"We will also put in place an incentive scheme that will allow farmers a 20 per cent discount if they pay rent five years in advance, cutting the administrative costs for Government and reducing paperwork for farmers."

Mr George said in relation to converting leases to freehold, the Coalition would also cut the administrative cost of conversions.

"Labor is slugging people $1700 or more in administrative costs, plus the value of the land. The Coalition will cut these costs to $1200. We will also look at further incentives for farmers to freehold their permits when we are elected to government in 2007.

"Where these leases are only of value to the farmer, such as a permit in the middle of a paddock, farmers should be given every chance to own that parcel of land at minimal cost."

Mr George said The Nationals/Liberal Coalition would ensure through legislation that all factors affecting the value of land being valued by the Valuer-General were taken into consideration to ensure the land valuations are not wrongly inflated.

"There is a clear choice between the fair-minded Nationals/Liberal Coalition position and Labor's greedy tax-grab on farmers."
