`ICE' FACTORY ARRESTS SHOWS NEED FOR LOCAL DRUG SQUAD

19 April 2006

Member for Lismore, Thomas George MP has called on Police Minister, Carl Scully to appoint a dedicated drug squad to the North Coast region following the recent arrests in Murwillumbah and Lennox Head of alleged `Ice' manufacturers.

"These most recent `Ice' related arrests in Murwillumbah and Lennox Head highlights again the serious level of illicit drug activity taking place in the North Coast region," Mr George said.

"We are no longer talking about low level drug production, but something much more serious."

"A dedicated drug squad is urgently needed to combat such highly organised drug production rings."

Mr George said he would be meeting with Assistant Commissioner, Northern Region Commander, Peter Parsons and local Mayors, Cr Merv King, Cr Charlie Cox and Cr Phil Silver on Friday to discuss the reinstatement of a dedicated drug squad in the North Coast region.

"The most recent `Ice' arrests demonstrate a strong argument for directing drug-fighting resources to the Tweed/Byron, Richmond and Coffs/Clarence Police Local Area Commands."

Last week in Parliament during debate of the Law Enforcement (Controlled Operations) Amendment Bill, Mr George called on the Minister and Commissioner to re-establish a specialist drug unit to help deal with problems that I have been highlighting in Nimbin as well as crimes occurring across State borders areas.

"Our local police work as hard as they can in the fight against illicit drug production and use, but they must have on hand the proper resources, manpower and expertise to fight the drug problem at all levels," he said.
