REPORT RECOMMENDS SUMMERLAND WAY AS ALTERNATIVE ROUTE

16 May 2006

Member for Lismore, Thomas George has welcomed the recommendation of the Pacific Highway Upgrades Report in relation to upgrading the Summerland Way.

"Recommendation four of the Report released by Committee Chairperson, Jenny Gardiner MLC specifically recommends the RTA investigate the Summerland Way as an alternative freight route through the North of the State, stating;

That the RTA investigate the incorporation of the Summerland Way, including a route through the narrowest part of the Border Ranges to the Beaudesert as part of its examination of the overall North Coast Pacific Highway Strategy.

Mr George said whilst the former Roads Minister Joe Tripodi had announced an investigation of the alternative route proposal in January, there had been no progress on the issue.

"The Pacific Highway Upgrade Report again highlights the urgent need for alternatives to the Pacific Highway coastal route for the movement of freight through the Far North Coast region, Mr George said.

"We need to get on with examining this proposal as an alternative and long term means of providing a solution to the movement of heavy transport linking the Summerland Way via Kyogle and East of Mt Lindsay into South East Queensland.

"I warmly welcome the Pacific Highway Upgrade's Report recommendation in this regard and call on the Road's Minister to release any findings he may have relating to the alternative inland route proposal."
