KYOGLE COUNCIL REPORT CONFIRMS PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS

4 May 2006

Member for Lismore, Thomas George says the NSW Department of Local Government's Report into the Kyogle Shire Council tabled in State Parliament today confirms local representatives and the communities concerns about problems within the Council.

"The investigation confirms concerns held over a period of time about the performance of Kyogle Shire Council," Mr George said.

"Specifically the Report highlights problem in areas such as the management of Crown Reserves, the performance of senior staff, breaches in regard to statutory and regulatory requirements and significant procedural and administrative inadequacies."

Mr George said he held grave concerns about the short-term future of the Kyogle Shire Council with the report recommending the Minister for Local Government authorise a public inquiry into Kyogle Shire Council.

"Whilst it is important that any breaches or procedural issues are properly investigated any inquiry must be conducted fairly and with the determination to resolve the issues as quickly as possible in the interest of the local community," he said.

"I call on the Minister for Local Government to work expediently with the Kyogle Shire Council and the community to address the matters raised in today's Report."
