STRONG SUPPORT FOR NIMBIN POLICE PUSH

Member for Lismore, Thomas George's calls for a stronger police presence in Nimbin have been firmly supported in the State Parliament.

Speaking in the House, Thomas George called for an increased police presence in Nimbin as well as end to the assumption that certain activities were exempt from the usual laws in the town.

"I assure the people of Nimbin that they are no different to the people of any other town in this State," Mr George told Parliament.

"There seems to be an attitude among a certain section of the Nimbin population that they have an exemption from the application of the law. This attitude has been evident for a few years and people seem to think that because they have continued over a period of years, they are condoned."

Mr George said his calls over many years for extra police were supported by the local community and visitors to the town.

"Nimbin is one of the prettiest towns in the State. It has a huge tourist potential. Unfortunately, people who visit Nimbin cannot get out of their cars before their car window is knocked on and they are asked what drugs they want to buy." he said.

In a rare response to the Private Member's Statement made by Mr George, Police Minister Carl Scully said he supported the Member for Lismore's strong words of support for policing efforts in the area.
