THOMAS GEORGE RELEASES PETITION SUPPORTING INCREASED POLICE RESOURCES

19 May 2006

Member for Lismore, Thomas George MP today released a petition calling for more police resources for the Richmond Area Command.

Mr George said the NSW Leader of The Nationals Andrew Stoner has also launched a State-wide petition calling on the Carr-Iemma Labor Government to increase the number of police in local communities.

"Further to my repeated calls for extra police resources, particularly for areas like Goonellabah and Nimbin, I am now calling on local residents to sign this petition supporting more police resources for the local area.

"The people of the Lismore Electorate want to see more police resources in our communities," Mr George said.

"Law and order is an issue that concerns local residents. We want a safer community with more police resources.

"We are tired of Premier Iemma and his police minister in Sydney reducing police resources without any regard for the impact it has on the safety of our communities.

"The petition aims to highlight the insufficient numbers of police in communities throughout the Lismore electorate and in other rural and regional areas throughout NSW.

"Signatures will then be presented by Nationals' MPs to the NSW Parliament including those collected from here in the Lismore electorate," Mr George said.

"I urge local residents concerned about law and order and the reduction in police numbers in our region to sign this petition calling on Premier Iemma to take our concerns seriously."

Earlier this month in State Parliament, Police Minister Carl Scully said he supported the Member for Lismore's strong words of support for policing efforts in the area.
