THE TRUTH ABOUT LISMORE & CASINO HOSPITAL WAITING LISTS

Waiting lists in the North Coast Area Health Service have grown by a staggering 3,690 in the 11 years since Labor was elected on a promised to halve hospital waiting lists, according to the NSW Shadow Spokesperson for Health, Jillian Skinner MP.

"Across the State more than 80 per cent of hospitals have seen increases in their waiting lists since March 1995," said Nationals Member for Lismore, Thomas George.

"The latest waiting list figures show that fourteen of the fifteen hospitals in the North Coast Area Health Service have had an increase in the number of patients waiting for elective surgery over the past 11 years and many hospitals have jumped by considerable amounts."

The waiting lists for hospitals in the Lismore electorate are as follows -

Casino & District Memorial Hospital 107
Lismore Base Hospital 1,238

"Whilst Casino Hospital's waiting list has decreased by 11% (down from 120), Lismore's has increased by 167% (up from 463).

"In NSW there are a total of 58,461 patients on surgery waiting lists now compared to 44,707 when Carr's Labor promised to halve the list," Mr George said.

"These waiting lists are doing a terrible injustice to the 1300 patients waiting for surgery in this area.

"Many doctors claim these waiting lists are very conservative with many more patients not counted. Of the many tactics used to artificially reduce waiting lists, the practice of re-categorising patients is one of the most obvious," Mr George said.
