Area Health Service Must Support
Northern Rivers Family Care Centre
19 April 2007
Member for Lismore, Thomas George says the North Coast Area Health Service should reconsider its decision not to support the Northern Rivers Family Care Centre which provides vital post-natal services to local families.
“The Northern Rivers Family Care Centre has assisted more than 1700 families with early parenting issues over the last five years, helping 571 last year alone,” Mr George said.
“It is a vital service which provides valuable support to parents who are having difficulties managing; feeding, sleeping and adjustment problems post-birth.”
Mr George said the Northern Rivers Family Care Centre cost $180,000 per year to run and had received significant contributions from community organizations in the past to continue operating.
“In other regions, the Area Health Service is responsible for funding Family Care Centres, Mr George said.
“It is extraordinary that the NCAHS has refused to fund the service. Why are we missing out when other regions have secure funding to run these vital Family Care services?”
Mr George said even the Guidelines for Family Care Centres in NSW 2000, NSW Health stated ‘The Family Care Centre is part of the network of services for families with children 0-5 years provided by an Area Health Service’ (p2).
“The North Coast Area Health Service must reconsider its decision not to fund the Northern Rivers Family care Centre. This region deserves important health services like other regions in the State.”
