2007 Budget: Government Fails To Listen

19 June 2007

The Iemma Labor Government has failed to recognise the urgent need for Stage 2 for the Integrated Cancer Treatment Facility for Lismore Base Hospital, The Nationals Member for Lismore, Thomas George, said today.

“The Cancer Unit has been overlooked and not listed for any special funding in this 2007 Budget, delivered today. The Budget lacks imagination and any significant commitment to improving services in regional NSW.

“The absence of any comment or commitment by the Treasurer on the Casino to Murwillumbah Rail Service further indicates this service will never be reinstated under Labor.

“We have already been told about the funding for the following projects re-announced by the Treasurer today, which have either been started or are nearing completion:

“Funding was also allocated to:

  • Kyogle Fire Station ($300,000) renovations; and
  • The Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority in line with other authorities.

“I am extremely disappointed with the Iemma Labor Government’s smoke screening tactics through its Budget papers. I am now anxiously waiting to examine further detailed documents in the hope of allocations for the Stage 2 Redevelopment at Lismore Base Hospital and additional capital works for local schools.

“The Iemma Labor Government claimed to be concerned about regional areas, however this Budget certainly lacks that commitment to regional areas,” Mr George said.
