Richard Torbay Member for Northern Tablelands

Torbay welcomes George as Temporary Speaker in Parliament
Speaker and Member for Northern Tablelands Richard Torbay has welcomed the appointment of Thomas George as one of four temporary speakers in the NSW Legislative Assembly.

He said Mr George was a person of high integrity and was well respected by both sides of the House.

“He is an ideal MP to take on this important role as temporary speaker which he will share with government and opposition Members,” Mr Torbay said.

“All eight members of the Speaker’s team face the challenge of improving the conduct of the Legislative Assembly.

"People who have contacted me have made it very clear that is what they want and having members of both government and opposition in the Speaker’s chair at various times should assist that process.”

Mr Torbay said he and Mr George, the Member for Lismore had both entered Parliament in 1999 and had developed a good working relationship.

“I know Thomas is a great advocate for his community and is involved in many local organisations,” he said.

“I look forward to working with him and the rest of the team on the challenges we face over the next four years.”
