THOMAS GEORGE GETS HANDS DIRTY FOR SMALL BUSINESS

Thomas George gets hands dirty for small business

17 August 2006

Small businesses across New South Wales will be putting their local politicians to work as part of the of the ABL State Chamber and Australia Post Pollies for Small Business program, to be held from Monday 21 August to Saturday 26 August, 2006.

Thomas George MP, Member for Lismore, will be visiting local businesses Luv-a-Coffee of Carrington Street Lismore on Monday 21 August 2006 from 8.30 to 11.15 am and JH Williams Rural Store, Murwillumbah on Friday 25 August from 8.00am to 12.00pm.

“I am looking forward to working alongside local Small Business owners to refamiliarise myself with today’s pressures faced by small business operators in the region. I also enjoy the opportunity of showing my support for this important sector of our local economy,“ Thomas George said.

ABL State Chamber CEO, Kevin MacDonald, said that politicians often deal with the big picture when it comes to regulations and legislation, so working in a small business for the day can help them gain some valuable insights.

“Even though many politicians may have run their own business at some stage, the reality is the pressures on small operators are constantly changing,” Mr MacDonald said.

“The ABL State Chamber and Australia Post Pollies for Small Business program gives small operators the opportunity to deal with their local MP on familiar turf rather than meeting in an electorate office or at Parliament House.

“It helps to level the playing field for a day and hopefully leads to an improved understanding and mutual respect on both sides,” Mr MacDonald said.

The ABL State Chamber and Australia Post Pollies for Small Business program is run in cooperation with the local Chamber of Commerce network. Politicians were asked to donate some time to work in a small business in the lead-up to Small Business September.
