LISMORE TO HOST UPCOMING DOCS INQUIRY

LISMORE TO HOST UPCOMING DOCS INQUIRY

17th January 2008

Member for Lismore, Thomas George MP is encouraging local residents to make submissions to the upcoming Woods Inquiry into the Department of Community Services.

The Inquiry will be holding public forums around the state, and will be visiting Lismore on 27 March 2008.

“Anyone who has had prior dealings with the Department and wishes to have their concerns aired can contact the Inquiry prior to the close of submissions on 11 February 2008,” Mr George said.

“With 114 children dying last year who were known to the NSW child protection system, - 33 of them from abuse, neglect or suspicious circumstances - it is essential that improvements be made to the Department of Community Services.

“Last year’s Auditor General’s report confirmed that despite a $1.2 billion so-called improvement program, DoCS is still failing to adequately investigate calls about children at risk of harm in the community.”

“As a community, we need to address these problems in order to ensure that no more lives are lost unnecessarily.”

Mr George said further information about making a submission to the Inquiry and attending the public forum could be made by contacting his office.
