FEDS MUST EXTEND EXTRA FLOOD ASSISTANCE TO NORTHERN RIVERS SAYS THOMAS GEORGE

25th January 2008

Thomas George, Nationals Member for Lismore, speaking on behalf of the committee formed to seek extra flood assistance for this area, today called on Federal Agriculture Minister, Tony Burke to also extend one-off federal flood assistance announced for Emerald, to the Northern Rivers region.

“The Federal Minister, Tony Burke announced late Thursday afternoon one-off grants to flood affected areas of Queensland. These include payments of $1000 for adults and $400 for children whose homes have been seriously damaged by floodwaters,” Mr George said.

“The announcement also provides for grants of up to $10000 and $25000 to help some small businesses, including farmers.

“Given the serious nature of the recent Northern Rivers floods which have escalated to an estimated $100 million worth of damage to individuals, small businesses and to the farming and tourism industries this federal relief should be immediately extended to the Northern Rivers.”

Mr George said the flow on effects from the flood damage were expected to be long-lasting and severe, and industries and individuals were in urgent need of one-off grants to help them get back on their feet.

“I call on the Prime Minister and Federal Minister for Agriculture to recognise the extent of damage that has occurred in our area and extend the relief offered to those in Queensland to those who have also been affected in NSW.”
