Director Richmond-Tweed Regional Library is open to Media.
WHEN: TODAY 1:00 pm
WHERE: Lismore Library,
Magellan Street LISMORE
Member for Lismore, Thomas George will today be presented petitions by Martin Field, Director, Richmond-Tweed Regional Library which have been signed by patrons and supporters from Lismore and surrounding districts requesting the Iemma Government restore funding to its original 24 %.
“Over time the State Government has reduced Library funding from 24% to 7.8% and cut Library budgets by over $1M without consultation. As a result of this dramatic reduction in funding Local Governments have been pressured to assist with the shortfall,” Mr George said.
“No other state in the country provides less than 19% funding. NSW has 400 public libraries which last year received 31 million visits.
“50% of Australians are registered members of their local Public Library, a utility that helps build and strengthen communities and provide equity of access to people of all ages, regardless of socio-economic status.
Mr George said these petitions convey the strong protest by local library users who want an adequate and equitable level of funding restored.
