GEORGE CONDUCTS TWO-DAY NORTHERN RIVERS NATURAL DISASTER/INSURANCE AUDIT
George conducts two-day Northern Rivers Natural Disaster/Insurance Audit
“…I want to ensure people are getting as much help as possible …”
Member for Lismore Thomas George is asking for the local community to participate in an audit on Wednesday and Thursday (13-14 Feb) into DoCS-run Recovery Centres support, outstanding insurance claims and repairs as a result of recent local natural disasters.
“Communities which I represent have been especially hard hit by natural disasters in recent months including the hail storm in Lismore, the tornado in Dunoon and January flooding in Murwillumbah, Lismore and Kyogle areas,” Mr George said.
“Again I would like to pay tribute to the emergency service volunteers who have responded brilliantly to these events, but many locals have been left severely out of pocket because some insurance companies, have invoked ‘Act of God’ small print clauses to deny claims.”
Mr George said the purpose of his audit was to firstly to ensure people were getting as much help as possible and secondly to gather solid information to take to the State Government with a review to improving the system ahead of future major weather events.
“NRMA Insurance is making ex-gratia payments to flood victims, but that is not sustainable if its competitors don’t do the same. That is why further Government regulation of the industry may be necessary, as applies in other countries,” Mr George said.
"I am asking locals to write to me with a brief summary of any outstanding insurance claims and repair works following the hail storm, tornado and floods.”
“I want to hear from people who have had trouble with their insurers, repair contractors as well anyone who has not received adequate help from the DoCS-run Recovery Centres in Murwillumbah, Kyogle and Lismore.”
Written submissions should be sent to PO Box 52, Lismore 2480, by fax on 6622 1403 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Any further information can be obtained by contacting Mr George’s temporary hotline on 6621 3049 which is operational on Wednesday and Thursday this week only.
Residents living outside Mr George’s electorate should contact their local State MP directly.
