GEORGE ENCOURAGES YOU TO HAVE YOUR SAY ON LABOR’S ELECTRICITY PLANS

03 August 2008

Member for Lismore, Thomas George today encouraged people in Lismore to have their say on the Iemma Government’s power privatisation plans.

This follows the determined efforts of the Liberal/Nationals Coalition to force a rural Communities Impact Statement based on genuine consultation.

“Morris Iemma refused to take his controversial power deal to an election to receive a mandate from the people, and his Government has consistently denied that there is any need for individuals in Lismore to have their say on this critical issue,” Thomas George said.

“By conceding to the Liberal/Nationals Coalition demands, the Iemma Government has been forced into an embarrassing about-face on their privatisation plans.

“The Nationals and I have stuck to our guns on this issue, maintaining that any debate on electricity should be remain transparent, and require real and meaningful community consultation.

“Country people in Lismore have very serious concerns about service levels, price rises and job losses if Morris Iemma pushes through his power privatisation, so this is their chance to be heard.”

Mr George said this is an opportunity for the people of NSW to voice their concerns on the issue.
