George Encourages Support for White Balloon Day
5 September 2008
Nationals MP Thomas George is calling on communities in his Electorate to show their support next Tuesday, 9 September, for White Balloon Day.
White Balloon Day is an annual event that raises the awareness of child sexual assault in the community.
“The event is held annually during National Child Protection Week and demonstrates the community’s desire to have children protected from sexual assault,” Mr George said.
“In promoting this day I hope to encourage the people of the Electorate to report any instances of current assaults and help ‘survivors’ of child sexual assault to seek assistance.”
“ While it is a horrible thought, the sad fact is that one in five Australian children will be sexually assaulted in some way before their 18th birthday.
“Funds raised from the day will go towards vital counselling and education programs. I urge everyone to support this event and know that by doing so you will be supporting tens of thousands of children and adults for whom this day means so much, ” Mr George said.
Tuesday September 9 will see the White Balloon Day event held for the eleventh successful year.
