SPORTING GROUPS ENCOURAGED TO APPLY FOR DISABILITY SPORT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Thomas George, Nationals Member for Lismore is calling for local sporting organisations to apply for funding under the NSW Department of Sport & Recreation’s Disability Sport Assistance Program.

This year’s round of funding has recently opened and will close on 26 September 2008. Community-based, not-for-profit organisations can apply for up to $20,000.

Mr George said the aim of the Disability Sport Assistance Program is to improve opportunities for people with disability to participate in sport and physical activity. The primary focus of the program is on increasing regular and on-going participation opportunities for people with a disability by supporting community based organisations with the capacity to provide such opportunities.

Who is eligible to apply:

• Provide sustainable opportunities for people with a disability to participate in regular and ongoing sport and/or physical activity;

• Demonstrate an ongoing sustainable increase participation numbers for people with a disability in sport and physical activity

• Link people with a disability to existing community-based activities.

Mr George said the types of projects which will be funded include:

• Programs and inclusive practices that aim to facilitate long-term change that will benefit people with a disability facing barriers to participation in sport and recreation;

• Modified equipment or modification of existing equipment required for the inclusion of people with a disability in the activity (up to 50 per cent of total grant). To remain the property of the local provider at the conclusion of the project.

• Lecturers’ or presenters’ fees for training or up-skilling of coaches, officials and volunteers to support program delivery to people with a disability (up to 50 per cent of total grant).
