Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George encourages everyone to support Foster Care Week being held this year from 14 to 20 September.

“The week provides us all with the opportunity to reflect on the magnificent job foster carers do in our community,” Mr George said.

“These people rearrange their own lives to provide care and security to children and young people who are unable to live with their own families.

“For a period of time – anywhere from one or two nights, weeks, or years – foster carers ensure their foster children have a secure family environment.

“Foster care can of course be both a challenging and rewarding role for which DoCS provides support, training and resources.

A fortnightly allowance is paid to foster carers in NSW based on the child’s age.

“DoCS provide intensive training and assistance in dealing with the effect experiences can have on a child’s life.

“Foster carers become an integral part of a team including caseworkers in helping the foster child, working with the birth family and specialists to find the best solutions to any problems which might arise.

“More foster carers are always desperately needed so if you are interested I would urge you to contact the DoCS' Foster Care Recruitment Line on 1800 011 110 or your nearest DoCS Community Service Centre.

“The more support we can offer foster carers the better to encourage people into this vital role,”Mr George concluded.
