JP APPLICATION FORMS NOW AVAILABLE ON-LINE

January 12 2009

Application forms for appointment as a Justice of the Peace (JP) in New South Wales are now available on the Internet.

The Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George said JP application forms could be downloaded from the website www.jp.nsw.gov.au.

He said the new application form had been designed to make it simpler for JP applicants to complete the necessary process for appointment.

“Justice of the Peace applicants are also able to access the Code of Conduct for JPs and A Handbook for JPs in NSW at the above website,” Mr George said. “These documents set out the acceptable standards of conduct for Justices of the Peace, as well as the detailed procedures for carrying out duties.

“Application for appointment as a JP still requires nomination by your State Member of Parliament, however reappointment does not require the same nomination.

“Justice of the Peace application forms are also available from my Electorate Office.”

Mr George said appointment to the office of Justice of the Peace was now made for a period of five years at a time, as the Justices of the Peace Act 2002, which commenced on 08 December 2003, abolished lifetime appointment of JPs in NSW.

“For JPs who previously had a lifetime appointment, the transitional period to seek reappointment under the Act ended on 08 December 2006.

“If you were previously appointed as a JP, you may check the status of your registration on the Public Register of JPs (on the website), which lists all registered JPs. If you do not appear in this register, you are not registered as a Justice of the Peace in New South Wales and cannot perform JP duties.”

Mr George said it was important for people to know if they were currently registered as a Justice of the Peace, as penalties applied for acting as a JP without proper authority.
