SENIORS AND PENSIONERS - DO YOU KNOW ABOUT LOCAL TRANSPORT DISCOUNTS?

24 Fedruary 2009

Discounts previously only available to city residents have now been extended to regional seniors and pensioners, Thomas George MP, Member for Lismore confirmed today.

“Following much confusion in the community, I am pleased to confirm that a discount transport ticket has been made available to local pensioners and seniors.

“Finally, regional residents have been extended the same transport discounts that have been available to Sydney residents for years,” Mr George said.

The Regional Excursion Daily (RED) tickets will allow eligible seniors and pensioners to purchase a $2.50 all day, multi-ride bus ticket. This means travellers can transfer between interconnecting contracted regular route bus services without paying an extra fare.

Mr George said the RED ticket was available on buses provided under Rural and Regional Bus Service Contract B, but not on the Countrylink coach/rail service.

The RED ticket is available to people holding; Pensioner Concession Cards issued by Centrelink or the Department of Veterans Affairs, Seniors Cards or a War Widower Card.

“Regional residents are already disadvantaged through a lack of public transport services, it is good to see that the NSW Government is finally trying to bring back some parity with the introduction of this discount fare,” Mr George said.
