NEIGHBOUR DAY - FAR NORTH COAST COMMUNITIES COMING TOGETHER

NEIGHBOUR DAY - FAR NORTH COAST COMMUNITIES COMING TOGETHER

4 March 2009

On Sunday 29 March 2009 the communities of the Far North Coast will have a chance to come together and celebrate Neighbour Day, Member for Lismore Thomas George said today.

“Neighbour Day is in its seventh year and is a celebration of the relationships between neighbours. The concept involves neighbours coming together at events such as street parties, community festivals, displays and launches to create closer ties between themselves.”

Mr George said Neighbour Day had five principal aims:

  1. Strengthen communities and build better relationships with the people who live around us.
  2. Create safer, healthier and more vibrant suburbs and towns.
  3. Promote tolerance, respect and understanding.
  4. Break down community barriers.
  5. Protect the elderly, the vulnerable and the disadvantaged.

“Knowing the people who live around us creates a sense of belonging. It makes us feel safe and secure because we’re reassured by the familiar faces and voices of people we trust and respect,” he said.

“When we know our neighbours we feel part of a community and are more comfortable about asking those neighbours for help or advice.

“In regional areas it can mean the difference between life and death during a flood or other emergency when warnings from neighbours are critical.

“Knowing how and where to contact your neighbour is essential because it’s their help that may be vital to defending life or property before the emergency services arrive. However it is vital that these relationships are developed prior to the emergency occurring”

Participating in Neighbour Day is easy and free. More information is available from Thomas George’s office or by visiting the website www.neighbourday.org
