GEORGE ENCOURAGES ENTRY IN "EN PLEIN AIR" ART COMPETITION

13 March 2009

The Nationals Member for Lismore, Thomas George, has encouraged all local painters to try their hand at an annual prize for a work done "en plein air".

The term ‘en plein air’ refers to the practice of painting out of doors, in direct engagement with nature, where the transitory effects of light can be observed and recorded.

In 2008 the Parliament commenced hosting the prize for an Australian artist of a New South Wales subject.

“This year, the closing date for the competition is 15 April 2009, and the winner will be announced on 5 May 2009 at Parliament House, Sydney,” Mr George said.

“Entry forms can be obtained from my offices or through the website below.

“Entries must be a painting that evokes a subject found in New South Wales. It may have been painted at any time but must have been painted "en plein air".

“The finalists will be exhibited at Parliament House and the winner will be awarded $20,000. The winning painting will enter the collection of the New South Wales Parliament.”
