GEORGE SUPPORTS CALL FOR NO TAB ON GOOD FRIDAY

18 March 2009

Member for Lismore Thomas George MP has given his strong support to George Souris’, Shadow Minister for Hospitality & Tourism, Racing and Major Events, call to keep the TAB closed on Good Friday.

“I strongly support the position taken by the Shadow Minister and NSW Opposition on this issue. Good Friday should remain free of racing,” Mr George said.

“There are certain days of the year that are traditionally held as sacred by most Australians and Good Friday is certainly one of them.”

“Good Friday is a day for family, friends and traditional observances, it is not the day to have a flutter.”

Mr George said that whilst the TAB is legally able to operate on holidays, the decision to open on Good Friday would not be well received by the community.

“I am at a loss to understand why the TAB would want to open on Good Friday anyway,” Mr George said. “As per the Racing Administration Act there is no Australian racing allowed in NSW on that day.

“I strongly support the NSW Liberal/Nationals Coalition commitment to continuing to observe racing free Good Friday and Christmas Day. These are the most important days on Australia's Christian calendar and should remain free of racing,” Mr George said.
