GIVE MORE TO PRESCHOOLS, GEORGE TELLS PARLIAMENT ON UNIVERSAL CHILDREN’S DAY

2 November 2009

“…Bianca Urbina from the Channon area has been a great advocate…”

Lismore Nationals MP Thomas George marked Universal Children’s Day on Wednesday 28 October 2009 with a speech in Parliament demanding the Rees Government increase funding for community-based preschools.

“The Commonwealth Government has committed $278.6 million in New South Wales to achieve universal access but has been unable to get the Rees Labor Government to spend a single additional dollar of its own money.” Mr George told the Legislative Assembly.

“I pay tribute to Bianca Urbina from The Channon, who has been a great advocate for early childhood education.

“Bianca has represented the area very well and as coordinator of the Children's Choice Preschool Campaign. This week she bought to my attention the need to highlight that a few weeks ago, NSW released its agreement with the Federal Government to work toward achieving universal access to early childhood education” said Mr George.

But Mr George questioned whether these measures were enough?

“Given that New South Wales spends way less on preschool education than other States do, this disparity will always remain.”

“While average preschool fees in other states and territories were $30 or less per week, in NSW it was $28 per day”, concluded Mr George.
