The Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George has welcomed the announcement that the first Graffiti Action Day will be held on Sunday 2 May 2010.

Mr George said graffiti has a negative financial and social impact on communities, and he hopes groups across the electorate will take part in the event, which is supported by Keep Australia Beautiful.

“I would certainly hope to see local Councils promote the day throughout the community, engaging residents and local groups to take part in identified sites where graffiti is present.

“Following registration, graffiti removal kits will be supplied and individuals can register to volunteer in this great day.

“I would strongly encourage any group or individual interested in supporting the event to contact their Council and express their interest and suggest a site within their community which requires attention.”

Mr George said Graffiti Action Day hoped to engage the community in the removal of graffiti and share advice in how to remove graffiti paint.

“The NSW Government hopes the Graffiti Action Day becomes an annual event, which will attract support from local volunteer groups who can assist in making our streets graffiti free.”

“It is an absolute eye-sore for locals and tourists to see graffiti in streets, on buildings, fences, public transport or park equipment.

“I hope to see the streets of our communities free from graffiti as a result of a successful Graffiti Action Day 2010.”
