LOCAL WOMAN RECOGNISED FOR DEDICATION TO TWEED VALLEY COMMUNITY

27 April 2010

Thomas George, Nationals Member for Lismore, today presented Meredith Dennis, of Limpinwood with a Premier’s Community Service Award.

“I am honoured today to recognise Meredith’s dedication to Tweed Palliative Support Inc (TPS) and other community groups.

“Since moving to the Tweed Valley from Sydney, Meredith has been actively involved in the community, starting with the Murwillumbah Hospital Auxiliary and Pink Ladies. She also leased the Hospital shop to provide refreshments and gifts for the public and a gathering place for staff,” Mr George said.

In July 1998 Meredith attended a public meeting calling for an urgent need for home based palliative support services and so TPS was formed.

It was identified there was a need to provide a casual meeting place for palliative patients to relax with family, so Rotary Club of Murwillumbah built a deck & awning at the rear of the coffee shop, managed by Meredith. The profits from the shop purchased equipment for the Palliative Ward.

In 2006 Tweed Clubs purchased a van for Meredith to use, instead of her own vehicle, to deliver medical equipment to clients in their homes.

Since TPS’s inception Meredith has worked tirelessly, up to 65 hours per week voluntarily, as President and Volunteer Co-ordinator. She attends weekly meetings at Tweed & Murwillumbah Hospitals and with Community Nurse groups to be briefed on the needs of palliative patients in the area and how best to assist them.

Meredith also provides shelter for lost/injured animals on her property and is a member of the Board and Management Committee of the Tweed River Art Gallery.

“Through her involvement with TPS Meredith has given care, comfort and support to people during the final stages of their life.

“It is the commitment and dedication of people like Meredith which enriches our community,” Mr George said.
