The Richmond Valley Independent
YMCA NSW Youth Parliament 2010
This annual forum for young people in NSW to learn about parliamentary processes. The YMCA is currently calling on applications of next year’s program. Youth parliament is open to high school students aged 15 to 19 from all across NSW. Students who are successful in their application development bills in teams on an issue they would like to debate at Youth Parliament. Participants attend a training camp and a week long camp during which they spend 3 days at NSW Parliament House debating their bills.
In the past I have enjoyed being involved in this important and very interesting program, joining with local students and witnessing their talents in debating and taking on an active role in developing their skills and abilities. I encourage local students to apply for the program.
Social Policy Framework Forum
I was pleased to welcome Shadow Ministers, Ms Jillian Skinner (Health), Ms Pru Goward (Community Services and Women), The Hon Melinda Pavey (Emergency Services) and Mr Steve Cansdell (Parliamentary Secretary for Community Safety) to the Lismore electorate in November as part of the NSW Liberal/Nationals Social Policy Framework community forums.
This community consultation was a great success and many residents provided feedback and input into how best to achieve our social policy goals and principles.
Anyone interested in participating in this process can visit www.sshs.com.au for more details or alternatively by writing to:

Are you the Lismore electorate Woman of the Year?
I invite you to nominate a woman in the Lismore electorate to become the local 2010 Woman of the Year.
The Woman of the Year should have made a significant contribution to the community which has resulted in progress for NSW Women or girls while motivating others to challenge themselves and make their own contributions.
Nomination forms can be found online at www.women.nsw.gov.au or can be requested by phoning the Lismore electorate office on telephone (02) 6621 3624, facsimile (02) or email: email@example.com. Forms should be submitted to my Lismore office by the end of the month.
Extra funding to upgrade your country hall
The NSW State Government has announced an extra $2 million for its Community Hall Renewal fund.
Under the program approved applicants will receive $2 for every $1 they raise towards upgrading a community-owned hall in a town of less than 10,000 residents.
Two million dollars is a not a huge sum considering the number and condition of country halls across the State, so my advice would be to apply early.

On behalf of Deborah and I and my staff, may I extend my very best wishes for the festive season. May the Peace and Joy of Christmas be with you all at this time and trust that we will all be blessed with good health in 2010.
