WEARING RED FOR WOMEN AND HEART DISEASE

WEARING RED FOR WOMEN AND HEART DISEASE

8 June 2010

The Member for Lismore Thomas George is supporting the heart foundations Go Red for Women campaign to raise awareness about women and heart disease.

Mr George said the statistics regarding women and heart disease are worrying as heart disease is the number one killer of Australian women. Heart disease kills four times as many women as breast cancer over 11,000 women a year but eight out of ten women remain unaware of this alarming fact.

Mr George says the risk of heart disease increases in women after menopause and heart disease is not always obvious and sometimes having a heart attack may be the first sign of an underlying condition.

The good news is that heart disease is largely preventable. You can reduce your risks by living a healthier lifestyle. Aim for a healthy weight, reduce your intake of saturated fats and salt, quit smoking and be more physically active.

“The Heart Foundation is encouraging women to be as vigilant in looking after their heart health as many of them are about their breast health and I’m delighted to be supporting their campaign.” said Mr George.

Supporting the Go Red for Women campaign is easy and will help save the lives of many Australian women. I urge all women to support the campaign wear red on Friday 11 June and share this important message with their friends.
