BOOKLET RAISES AWARENESS FOR SAFETY, SAYS LOCAL MP

1 July 2010

“If this booklet saves just one life what a difference it will make to our community,” said Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George when he launched his latest community initiative “Keep safe on the road and at home”.

The eight-page booklet is being delivered to every household in the Lismore Electorate this week.

Mr George said he felt compelled to produce the booklet after despairing about the high road toll among young P Plate drivers. “I cannot believe or accept that a P Plate driver is killed on our roads every six days,” Mr George said.

“Every week there will be 11 people start a journey they will not complete. In that same week there will be 500 more people injured on the road. These are awful statistics but they are true.”

Mr George has produced the booklet in an effort to raise awareness of road safety and to recognise some of the local efforts and initiatives taking place to help reduce the road toll.

The guide also contains a section on home safety and some general tips on how to cope in emergency, preparing for an emergency and what to do when confronted with such a situation. “It is the tragic loss of young lives which is most concerning, and any effort to help teenagers and young drivers get a better understanding of road safety is a good thing,” Mr George said. He urged everyone to take the time to read the booklet.

Additional copies are available from Mr George’s office.
