MORE CRACKS SHOW AS LISMORE BASE HOSPITAL DISCHARGES ELDERLY ICU PATIENT PREMATURELY

How sick do you have to be to remain a patient at the Lismore Base Hospital, Nationals’ Member for Lismore Thomas George wants to know.

Mr George today said he was outraged to learn a 70 year-old Casino resident had been discharged and sent home straight out of LBH’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) just two days after being on life support.

“Adding to the patient’s and his family’s stress, the patient was promptly sent off home into the hands of his fragile 73 year-old wife, who was totally unprepared to look after him in his condition,” Mr George said.

“With no clothes or shoes to leave hospital, nor any mobility aid for his poor balance, the only advice the man was given as he was wheeled out in a hospital gown was to go buy a walking stick and see a GP in a few weeks.

“Within a day of being released, the patient dramatically declined physically, was complaining of headaches and both he and his wife fell together as she was assisting him.

“A day later the man was back in the Emergency Department of Casino Hospital where it was discovered he had developed a Urinary Tract Infection.”

Mr George described the treatment the man received at LBH as appalling and bordering on being inhumane.

“Clearly this man’s early discharge and the manner in which he was sent home was inappropriate and led to his further demise,” said Mr George.

“Rushing patients out the door before they are fit and well is wrong.

“The State Government needs to fix the problems at LBH to prevent others from going through the same trauma.

“We need more beds and more nurses and we need them NOW.”
