SOLAR PANEL FEED-IN TARIFF QUERIES

SOLAR PANEL FEED-IN TARIFF QUERIES

24 August 2010

Thomas George, the Nationals’ Member for Lismore, has received information about the solar panel feed-in tariffs and the impact that the income generated would have on people’s pensions.

The following points have been clarified: -

Where feed-in tariffs are paid as a credit on the electricity account, the tariffs will not be assessed as income under the income support test.

Where tariffs are paid as cash such as cheques or direct deposit; the tariffs are assessed as income for income support purposes. Pensioners only need to report cash feed-in tariff when they are received and these cash payments will be assessed as income over a 12-month period.

“Under the income test from 1 July 2010, single pensioners can earn up to $146 per/fortnight without affecting the amount of pension they receive. Couples combined can earn up to $256 a fortnight without affecting the amount of pension they receive. Income over the test free areas decrease pension by 50 cents per dollar.

“Constituents can also arrange an interview with Centrelink Financial Information Service (FIS) officers, who are specially trained to provide information on the operation of the income and assets tests.”

“I hope this has made things clearer for people that had any confusion or questions about the solar panel feed-in tariffs,” Mr George said.
